A Charmed and Happy Home

I've been thinking a lot lately about the above quote from Deborah Needleman.  I picked up her book, The Perfectly Imperfect Home, and it really resonated with me.  Have you heard of it?  It's a very easy read, full of honest, practical decorating advice.

Spending so much time and energy on making a house a home can sometimes feel frivolous.  This quote helped me realize that creating a happy home, one that you and your family enjoy being in, feel safe and comfortable in, where love, food, and romance abide, is anything but frivolous.  It is, indeed, noble.

Lamp Makeover with Greek Key Trim

Hi all!  Hope you had a lovely weekend and are ready for a great week.  I kicked off the weekend with a DIY project that took less than 45 minutes- my kind of project!  I transformed a pair of Homegoods lamps with spray paint and Greek Key trim.  I adore the result.

You may recall seeing these lamps before, because they have been through a previous transformation- that I wasn't crazy about.  They were initially a faux distressed dull tan and I sprayed them navy blue and added a corresponding ribbon.  But even then, I didn't really love the result.

I was determined to salvage these lamps and spent some time trying to figure out what color would look best, settling on classic black.  Lately, I've been impressed with this black spray paint from Restoleum that dries fast with a bit of a glossy sheen.

After spraying the bases black, the shades still looked too bland.  I remembered seeing my friend Emily (A Well Dressed Home) add decorative trim to her lamps and knew that's just what these needed.

I ordered several yards of black and beige trim from M&J Trimming.  It's $8 a yard and comes in a variety of other color combinations and sizes.

I cut the trim to fit the top and bottom of each shade and affixed it with fabric glue.  The updated look is so much better than before!

I like it so much I'm considering adding trim to my bedroom lamps too (also a Homegoods find).

DIY (LOVE) Art

What is the message I want to convey in my home?  Love.  Lucky for me, I have a prime spot to display a little whimsical LOVE art.

I'm a big fan of typography, letters, words, and think they make great decoration in the home.  You've probably seen these 12-inch letters at Hobby Lobby.  They sell for $10, but are always on sale for 50% off.  They come in a rustic gold and bronze, but I wanted them in a glitzy gold and black.  You can also get them online here for $6.99.

These are my two favorite Gold and Black spray paints.  The gold is a true gold (I have another that is more rose gold) and the black is super shiny.  I didn't prime these letters- just sprayed the paint right on.

I arranged the letters in a box shape to balance the wall.  And I thought this arrangement looked more modern.

I really like it, but is it me or is the "E" bigger than the "V"??  I'm terrible at hanging things on the wall, so I might have to try again.

P.S.  A couple people asked about the rug in our entryway, it's from Home Decorators, here's the link.  Sorta wishing I got the darker brown now . . .

Brunch Tablescape (Pottery Barn Mystery Box Challenge)

Recently I was given the very cool opportunity to participate in a friendly competition created by one of my favorite retailers, Pottery Barn.

The challenge was to design a tablescape for a party of four inspired by a "Mystery Box" of Pottery Barn products- um, yes! sign me up!  I was so anxious to see what we would receive and giddy when the packages arrived last month.

Talk about Christmas in July for this little kid . . .

and for Mama! Yeah, I get to keep the goods- and there's a chance for you to win them all too! :)

I was also given $50 to shop for additional decor and/or food for the party.

I bought a fun black and white polka dot fabric to create a tablecloth and my inspiration flowed from there.  I decided to use the black and white with pops of bright orange and pink, paired with my black and gold chevron plates and cups that I already owned.

I'm excited to share the final result with you!

Here's the roundup of how I used the Pottery Barn products in my Girlfriends Brunch Tablescape:

1. Great White 3-Tier Stand

2.  Claro Cake Stand
